Can Pilots Carry Guns                                                  By: Robert Redmond

There is an ongoing debate over whether pilots should be able to carry guns on airplanes. The argument is that armed pilots would prevent potential hijackers from taking over control of the aircraft like they did on 9/11.  But, the argument against guns in the cockpit is that it will cost too much money. The cost will be about $2,500 per pilot.
The other argument against the "Guns in the cockpit" is that the hijackers could take the guns from the pilots and use them in the commission of the crime.
I think that pilots should be able to carry guns because it is the only way to protect themselves and the crew from a plane being hijacked. I also can understand the opinion against the use of guns due to the fact that if the hijackers get a hold of the guns that they can cause more damage than originally intended.
Below are some of the opinions on my friends on this issue.

Will- 15-" No they should not carry guns because they could be used against them."
Kevin-14-" This is a catch 22 situation.  The fact of the matter is that if the pilot's carry fire arms then it will be a danger to them on the one hand because the terrorists can grab them by force. Then the terrorists can use them against the passengers and the pilots. But if the pilots are strong enough, they can use the weapons to their advantage. It would depend on the individual and circumstance."

Defensive line Against Blaze
By - Robert Redmond

In Selma, Oregon more than 1500 fire fighters are working nonstop battling a 30-mile fire. The fire has nearly consumed 200,000 acres from rural communities between Oregon and California the fire has been slowed by the rough terrain in mountain areas weather and unpredictable winds.
Fire crews hope by early morning to have at least a third of the fire stopped. But officials think that off shore winds could still could push the fire past their defenses and start people to evacuate the fire torn area. The local populace of 17000 is on stand by to leave and 950 have already evacuated.
My opinion is that if the fire managed to get to the town they should use air support to drop water on the fire and slow it down so the fire crews can work their way through the fire.
About 438000 acres a area the size of a city are burning in Oregon making the fire a potential record breaker and a large threat to the area.  Almost 4.3 million acres have burned this year that's more than twice the average amount.  I believe that they should evacuate the town due to the fact that is the fire could get out of control and many people could be hurt or killed before rescue efforts manage to save the locals.

Possible Invasion On Iraq
By Robert Redmond

In my opinion, President Bush has not shown a valid  reason to make an assault on Iraq. Congress would be behind Bush if he could supply information that Saddam has weapons of mass destruction.
Senator Lugar said, "That while not inevitable it will be probable that an invasion of Iraq will be necessary." My opinion of this situation is that if we start a war it would cause serious problems for the neighboring countries.
If we attack Iraq they could use their chemical power on Israel and Jordan and other countries. Thompson said, "Do we sit back and hope we can negotiate our way out of that situation with Saddam? I don't think so. I believe that the more we try to talk the more time it gives Saddam to build more weapons and more of an army to retaliate if we did assault Iraq. Senator Carl Levin's said, "An attack on Iraq might simply prompt Saddam to use weapons of mass destruction due to the fact he would have nothing to lose." I agree 100% with what he said because the chemical weapons could be his trump card if he has been all but destroyed and he would not hesitate to use them on America and our allies.
The UN does not agree with attacking Iraq yet in the Gulf war they supported us and helped pay for the damage to the country. Out of the 61 billion dollars, the UN paid 7 billion dollars of the damage to Iraq.

FBI Program
By - Robert Redmond

There is a new FBI Program that is designed to provide the local police with information on terrorists that the FBI has gathered. It  is believed that some of the reports aren't that valuable.  600 police officers have applied for the program, but only about 320 of them have been granted access thus far. I believe that the information can be useful if there is a local terrorist problem   When the FBI gave the police unprecedented access to classified reports, the bureau expected a massive amount of requests for their information. But a fault of this program according to Chuck Wexler  is that "his police officials are put off by the programs demands." He also says that police are infuriated about having to undergo background checks of up too six months to gain access to the files.    My opinion is that they should not have to go thought background checks to get proper clearance to get the files.  They are policemen.
