Governor Bush and the death sentence; how do you feel about this topic? In 1999 bush vetoed a bill that would ban executions of people that are mentally retarded. John Paul Penry is on death row in Texas: He has the mental ability of a 7 year old, his mother was abusive, he was in and out of mental hospitals when he was a child, and now they want to put him through more punishment. A punishment he probably could not understand on his own anyway. On top of that there are more juvenile executions under Bush than I agree with. He puts more time and money into juvenile detention centers than he does in schools; I think that if he put some more money into schools, he would not need as many juvenile detention centers.
In April 1998 Joseph Cannon was executed for his crime in Texas under Bush's leadership: He wasn't old enough to drink, not old enough to vote, but yet he is old enough to be killed by the state. That's like saying you can die for your country at 18 but you cannot drink untill your twenty-one, which by the way is the truth. Cannon was not executed untill he was 38. He spent most of his life in jail on death row. He had brain damage, was illiterate, and operated at a third grade level. A story closer to present day, on January 25 2000 Glenn McGinnis was executed. He was the same age as cannon, 17 , at the time the crime was committed and Bush would not change his death sentence to life in jail. Even after the appeals from the European union, the American Bar Association, and Pope John Paul II. I think the death penalty is wrong unless you were very violent when you killed someone. Life in prison would be a worse punishment from what I heard about prison. I would rather die than to stay there for the rest of my life, well that's all the stories I could find on this topic and I put in some of my opinions as I went so I hoped you all enjoyed reading the article.
